Rice Senior, Elizabeth Cunningham was one of only 24 high school seniors in Vermont recognized as a Presidential Scholar by the VT Agency of Education. To be recognized with this distinction is one of the highest national honors for high school students.

Presidential Scholars are known to be well-rounded. Elizabeth was selected for her exceptional academic achievements, community service, and student leadership. The ceremony also recognized her talent with music: playing viola with the Vermont Youth Orchestra, and athletic achievements: competing at track meets year-round and breaking a DII 1500-meter State Record last year.

"The 2025 class of Presidential Scholars embodies what makes Vermont’s education system special," said Secretary of Education, Zoie Saunders. "These students are leaders in their schools, role models for their peers, and important members of their communities.” 

Elizabeth says, "Rice teachers not only care for their students’ intellect and progression, they care to form personal connections with each of us. My AP English Literature teacher knows the specifics of my natural writing style while my AP Physics teacher weaves physics into our lengthy discussions of running and track races. From them, I learned the value of establishing meaningful relationships in my various leadership and volunteer positions, rather than simply going through the motions."

Elizabeth plans to continue her education at Princeton University next year.
