A Note from Leadership Concerning Recent Events

Dear Rice Community,
 
There has been recent media coverage of an incident where Rice students may have been involved in an assault resulting in serious injury. The incident occurred after school hours and off campus. We are pursuing our own investigation.
 
Rice abhors and condemns physical violence. It is not consistent with the high standards of behavior that we expect from our students, on and off campus. If students violate our expectations and engage in serious misconduct, there can be discipline, including expulsion from the school. However, how we handle student discipline for specific students is a confidential matter governed by federal privacy laws.
 
As with any alleged serious misconduct, we expect to cooperate with law enforcement, if asked, and to evaluate the actions of our students based on our internal investigation. Where warranted, we will take action consistent with our values.
