I enjoy teaching History because: I love historical narrative crafting and I want to inspire the passion of being a lifelong learner in my students.
I choose to teach at Rice because: I am a proud alum of Rice and Rice is the foundation of my intellectual pursuits. I am personally invested in its continued growth and success.
What is your favorite thing about your job? My favorite thing about my job is when I see students actively engaging in class and wanting to better understand the world around them.
If you had an unexpected afternoon off, what would you do with your time? Catch up on grading papers!
Best vacation/trip you’ve ever been on: American Historical Association Conference in New York City. This conference helped me realize that I wanted to teach history at the secondary level.
Favorite tradition/fieldtrip/project you do in your classroom each school year: My favorite tradition is that in each block period of AP World History, students take turns bringing in breakfast for the class. My favorite class project is the AP World History historiography paper/presentation. Students choose a topic of their choice that they will research throughout the second term. They will analyze the way in which that topic has been written about and if there are important themes or a change over time within each topic. Students understand that not all history writing is the same!
Favorite Rice tradition or event: Stunt Nite
Favorite Rice Sports Team to watch: Boys and Girls Basketball teams.
Favorite Professional Sports Team or Athlete: New England Patriots
If a prospective family asked you “why should I send my student to Rice,” what would you say? I would say that Rice offers not only a strong academic curriculum with high expectations, but it also provides a close-knit community where any student can thrive if they set their mind to it.
