Ms. Smith comes from a family of artists whose traditions and experiences have created a deep personal interest in art. She has solid teaching experience, is enthusiastic, and has worked with a variety of mediums. Her background in art history and contemporary art have influenced a curriculum which encourages diversity and exploration of a wide range of cultures. She strives to motivate students to take creative risks, and encourage a life-long appreciation and enjoyment of art.

• She taught at an elementary school as a behavioral interventionist for 4 years before coming to Rice.

Get to Know Her:

I enjoy teaching art because: I grew up in a family of artists! Growing up, my grandmother would bring me to a different art exhibit every year. My love for art and art history grew as I did. Art has always been my main source of expression. I love sharing this passion with others and encouraging students to reach their full potential in the art room. It is powerful to watch students build confidence and creativity while expressing themselves through their work.

I choose to teach at Rice because: Rice aligns with my values and faith. I admire the strong sense of community at Rice.

What is your favorite thing about your job? My favorite thing about teaching art is that I get to do what I love, every single day! I get to make art, talk about art, and connect with so many people.

If you had an unexpected afternoon off, what would you do with your time? If I had an unexpected afternoon off, I would listen to a good podcast and walk or run on a trail at Red Rocks. On a rainy day, I would snuggle with my cats and read.

Favorite tradition/fieldtrip/project you do in your classroom each school year: My favorite project each year is printmaking!
