Dr. Magalhaes holds two doctoral degrees and has over two decades of teaching experience. Most recently she taught AP Chemistry, Integrated Sciences, Physics, and Human Physiology. She has also taught Math, Music and Piano and has worked with students of many diverse backgrounds. She strives to foster critical thinking, creativity, and a love for learning in all students and will be a welcome addition to our community.

Background:

• Ph.D. in Textile Engineering - Textile Chemistry from the University of Minho and a Ph.D. in Tourism from the University of Aveiro. Master’s in Environmental Sciences and Bachelor of Engineering in Textile Engineering, both from the University of Minho.
• She taught at Saint Michael’s College, Harwood Union High School, Portuguese Catholic University, various schools in Portugal, and was a researcher for more than 10 years, with a focus on environmental sustainability.
• She joined Rice in 2024

Get to Know Her:

I taught Chemistry, Mathematics, Research Methodologies, and Music. My passion lies in connecting with students and fostering an environment of mutual learning. Every student brings something unique to the classroom, which makes teaching an ever-evolving experience.

I choose to teach at Rice because: Rice Memorial High School’s commitment to both academic excellence and spiritual growth resonates with my values. The sense of community here is truly special.

What is your favorite thing about your job?  Engaging with students and seeing their curiosity ignite during hands-on experiments and discussions.

If you had an unexpected afternoon off, what would you do with your time? I’d likely spend it doing crochet or reading a good book.

Best vacation/trip you’ve ever been on: A cultural and historical exploration of Rome, where I immersed myself in art, architecture, and, of course, Italian cuisine.

If a prospective family asked you “why should I send my student to Rice?” What would you say? 
Rice Memorial High School is a supportive place where students can challenge themselves academically while also growing personally. It’s a school that helps students succeed in the classroom and become well-rounded individuals.
